Abstract Artist
I’m a born and bred New Yorker except for 2 transformative years…living in rural, Amish Country Lancaster, PA with my aunt and family as a young child and volunteering on a kibbutz picking dates in Israel after high school.
My late mom was an impressionist artist and while I often posed for her, I never felt inclined to pick up a brush – brushes felt and still feel quite foreign to me. I kept all my mom’s art supplies never thinking I would do anything with them.
In January 2021 I bought a small house upstate New York close to where I spent childhood summers at sleep away camp. The sights, sounds and smells take me back to those carefree days and have opened me up to explore creative expression.
In January 2023, I challenged myself to “do something creative every day” and broke out mom's art supplies…Artistic expression is very different than my 30+ year career producing television commercials for numerous advertising agencies.
My abstract style, is what a friend coined “Chaotic Calm.” I use vibrant colors and marking tools without a plan of where a piece will go…I love surprising myself by constantly turning and rotating the paper while in progress seeing different points of view (one of the reasons why I sometimes struggle knowing what is the “finished” side).
I go out to my 200-year-old barn studio, turn on music and tune out the real world. I have no phone service so I can disconnect and just dig into playing with art materials. I work with various mediums, mostly acrylic on paper but I also enjoy collaging, make paper objects and gel printing.
